Ochsner’s Dr. Choate Receives First Place At LA Orthopedic Assoc. Meeting
NEW ORLEANS - May 2, 2011 – Fourth-year orthopedic surgery resident Dr. W. Stephen Choate received first-place honors in the Resident Research Competition held in conjunction with the Louisiana Orthopedic Association's annual meeting in March.
Residency directors from each orthopedic residency program in the state-Ochsner, LSU-NO, LSU-Shreveport, and Tulane-selected a research paper for a podium presentation at the association's annual meeting. After all the papers were presented, visiting faculty selected Dr. Choate's "Arthroscopic Repair Versus Debridement of Labral Tears in Patients with Femoroacetabular Impingement" as the top paper.
"Lead investigator Dr. Misty Suri, Research Coordinator Stephanie Pawlak and I performed a prospective clinical study comparing the outcomes of labral debridement versus repair in the arthroscopic treatment of femoroacetabular impingement, or FAI," Dr. Choate explained. "No such prospective, comparative study exists in the current literature."
"I selected Dr. Choate to assist with this project because of his outstanding performance as an orthopedic surgery resident on his Sports rotation," Dr. Suri said. "He has taken charge, been a leader and shown tremendous dedication in our research."
The Ochsner community will have the opportunity to see Dr. Choate's work and discuss his research at Ochsner's Eighth Annual Research Night on May 10. The paper is currently pending publication.
"I am thankful to Drs. Suri, Meyer, and Warren for the opportunity to represent the Ochsner Orthopedic Department at this year's LOA resident research competition," Dr. Choate said. "I feel fortunate to have represented our program well."
Dr. Choate earned his MD from the University of Tennessee and his BS from Davidson College.
