ABOUT THE RACINE DOMINICANS
The Racine Dominicans have a 155 year history of serving Racine and beyond. Mother Benedicta Bauer, the foundress of the Racine Dominicans, came from Germany to the United States specifically to meet the needs of the German immigrants and founded a community committed to teaching their children. Education remained the primary focus of the community from 1862 until the 1960s when the Second Vatican Council challenged women religious to meet the needs of the current time. Thus the Racine Dominicans became involved in areas other than teaching such as: domestic violence, homelessness, needs of the lonely and abandoned, teaching English as a second language, and the need for a place of reflection and deepening one’s spirituality. The mission of the Racine Dominicans is “Through communal and contemplative presence rooted in God’s transformational Word, we are committed to truth and compelled to justice.” As the Sisters continued to be aware of the signs of the times, another need surfaced, that of memory care for those afflicted with dementia of various types and causes. Thus, Shorelight Memory Care was born.
Shorelight Memory Care, one facet of Siena on the Lake, has a mission which states: “Siena on the Lake’s mission is to provide a continuing choice community focused on person-centered care. We support with passion your dignity, choices, and life enrichment.” Shorelight’s Philosophy of Fullness of Life is to seek the best possible quality of life with a holistic, person centered approach to mind, body, and spiritual health care.
